St. Barnabas, Apostle (transferred)

St-Barnabas-cropped

June 11 — St. Barnabas (+ 61 )

 INVITATION TO PRAYER

 Christ, the Joy of the Apostles: Come, let us adore him!

We make the sign of the cross over our lips and sing:

O Holy One, open my lips;

~And my mouth will proclaim your praise!

Go out to the whole world, alleluia!

~Proclaim the Good News, alleluia!.

HYMN FOR APOSTLES’ FEASTS

Apostles of our ancient faith,

With all the heav’ns we sing your fame

Whose sound went forth in all the earth

To tell of Christ and bless his name.

You took the Gospel to the poor,

The Word of God alight in you,

Which in our day is told again:

That timeless word, forever new.

Like sparks among the straw, you ran

To set the universe ablaze;

To kindle love of Jesus Christ

And take his peace on all our ways.

Praise Abba, Word and Breath of Love

Whose gift is faith that never dies:

A light in darkness now, until

The daystar in our hearts arise.  Amen.

Text: Stanbrook Abbey (1971), alt. ; Tune: Plainsong MODE VIII

SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALMODY

 Antiphon

This one command I give you,

that you love one another, just as I have been loving you.

Psalm 147

O Praise Adonai,  Jerusalem,

Zion, praise the Holy One.

God’s-Love gives strength to the little ones,

And courage to face their fears.

Peace to be their sure refuge,

Golden wheat to share at the feast.

God’s-Word cuts through the resistance

That fosters greed and conceit;

Sends snow heavy as wool

And scatters frost like ashes;

Hurls down hail like crumbs,

Freezes the waters with Winter.

God’s-Word melts them with Spring,

God’s-Breath makes the waters flow.

The Word is written on our hearts

To guide us with wisdom and justice;

That together we may share with all people

God’s ways of justice and truth.

Glory to the Abba and the Word

and the Holy Breath of Love.

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen.

This one command I give you,

that you love one another, just as I have been loving you.

Reading   Acts 11: 21-24

In those days a great number who believed turned to the Lord.
The news about them reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem,
and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch.
When he arrived and saw the grace of God,
he rejoiced and encouraged them all
to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart,
for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.
And a large number of people was added to the Lord.

Responsory

R. Throughout all the Earth, their voices carry.

V. Their message resounds with hope for all.

V. Glory to the Abba and the Word and the Holy Breath of Love.

Gospel Canticle of Mary

Antiphon

I call you my friends, no longer are you slaves;

for I’ve made known to you, all the Abba told me.

It is customary to make the sign of the cross at the beginning of the Gospel Canticle.

Blessed + be Adonai, the God of Israel,

Who visits this people to set us free

Raising for us a sign of salvation

In the house and family of David.

God promised throughout past ages

In words of holy prophets

To save us from our enemies,

And from the control of our oppressors.

Adonai favored our ancestors

And remembered the sacred covenant.

The pledge to Abraham and Sarah

Is now renewed for us;

That freed from the grip of our foes

We might worship without fear

And be both just and holy

For the rest of our days.

And you, child, called “prophet of the Most High,”

Will go ahead to prepare the way,

By teaching this people of salvation

Through forgiveness of their sins.

For the loving compassion of the Holy One

As the Rising Sun will shine upon us

To illumine the darkness and dispel death’s shadow

To guide our feet on the way of peace.

Glory to the ONE and to  WORD

And to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

I call you my friends, no longer are you slaves;

for I’ve made known to you, all the Abba told me.

SERVICE OF PRAYER

Litany of Intercession

You gave us wonderful guidance in living the Gospel through apostles and teachers,

 – may we rejoice always in the legacy they have left us in writings and example.

You blessed St. Barnabas  with a special gift for encouraging his sisters and brothers to remain faithful to you with firmness of hearts,

– may we rejoice in the grace of God wherever it is revealed and encourage one another to be faithful to the Gospel.

You anointed your holy ones in the midst of their sisters and brothers and called the Holy Spirit down upon them,

– fill all the leaders of your people with your Holy Spirit that they may be strong, loving and wise.

You revealed that the greatest form of love is to lay down one’s life for others,

teach us to follow your example today by loving all those we encounter.
