SERVICE OF LIGHT

Greeting/Invocation

We light the Evening Candle and say or sing:

Light and Peace in Jesus Christ our Lord!

~Thanks be to God!

In the presence of the Angels I will bless you

~And adore before your Holy Dwelling.

ANGELS’ EVENING HYMN

Lord God, Triumphant, Majesty of Heaven, Dispatch from the skies messengers of power;

Send forth your angels with the blasts of trumpets, Lord God triumphant.

Michael God’s Strong Might, Sword of the Almighty, Break the night of war and the grasp of darkness. Roll like the thunder; wield the fire of justice; Bring the Light of peace.

Raphael, Healer; God’s Warm Wind of Wisdom; As you restored sight to that merciful man,

As you healed Tobit, through his son, Tobias, Bring us God’s healing Son.

Gabriel, God’s voice, Herald of the Good News, bearer of God’s Word to the Virgin Mother,

Fly now from heaven; bring again your message: Sound forth Christ’s coming.

Powers of our God, let us join your praises, To the Abba, Word and the Holy Spirit;

Chanting with one voice: Holy, Holy, Holy, Adonai Sabbaoth!  Amen!

Text: St. Meinrad (1971)  Tune: Plainsong Mode II

 SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALMODY

 Antiphon/Refrain

Bless Adonai, all you angels of God.
Mighty in power and obedient to God’s word.

Psalm 120/121

I life up my eyes to the mountains: from where shall come my help?

My help shall come from Adonai who made heaven and earth!

May God never allow you to stumble!  May your guard never sleep;

No, God sleeps not nor slumbers–Adonai, Israel’s guard.

Adonai is your guard and your shade; standing right there at your side.

By day the sun shall not smite you nor the moon in the night.

Adonai will guard you from evil; God will guard your soul.

Adonai will guard your going and coming, both now and fore ever.

Give glory to the Abba, and to the Word and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Bless Adonai, all you angels of God.
Mighty in power and obedient to God’s word.

Reading   Revelation 1: 4-5

Grace to you and peace from the ONE who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before the throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth, who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.

Responsory

(Translation) The angel stood before the altar of the temple having a golden censer in his hand, and there was given to him much incense; and the smoke from the spices ascended before the face of God. Alleluia! (Offertorium from September 29th)

Gospel Canticle of Mary

Antiphon

The Human One held seven stars in his right hand,

the Angels of the Churches.

It is customary to make the sign of the cross at the beginning of the Gospel Canticle.

My heart + is radiant with the Lord,

My whole being delights in God my Savior.

All people now will call me blessed

For God has loved this humble handmaid.

The Almighty has shown me great favor

Holy is the NAME,

Whose mercy embraces the faithful,

From one generation to the next.

The mighty arm of God,

Scatters the proud in their own conceit,

Pulls tyrants from their thrones

While lifting up the lowly:

Fills the famished with bounty,

And reveals the emptiness of riches.

Rescues lowly Israel,

Sharing such loving kindness,

As promised to our ancestors

To Abraham and Sarah, and their descendants forever.

Glory to the ONE and to  WORD

And to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

I heard the voice of countless angels round the throne:

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive honor and glory.

Those who wish may end evening prayer with the Salve Regina
Marian Antiphon

Mother of Mercy, Our Queen we greet you. Our life, our hope, our happiness we hail you.

We call to you as Eve’s own children, and exiles.  To you we lift our hearts in sorrow and fear,  in this valley of tears.  Turn then, our loving Advocate, and look with favor upon us.

And after our life in exile, show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.  O gracious, O loving, O Virgin benign, our Mother Mary.

Pray for us, Holy Mother of God ~ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.  Holy, Mighty and Immortal God, through the working of the Holy Spirit, you prepared the body and soul of the glorious virgin Mother Mary, as a worthy dwelling for your Word; grant that we, who celebrate her memory each evening, may with the help of her prayers, be freed from ever-present evil, and come to share the fulness of life eternal.   Amen.
