This is the day Adonai has made, alleluia!

~Let us rejoice and be glad in it, alleluia!

HYMN FOR EASTER III

Sing of One who walks beside us And this day is living  still,

One who now is closer to us Than the thoughts our hearts distill;

One who once upon  a hilltop, Raised against the pow’r of sin,

Died in love as his own creatures Crucified their God and Kin.

Strangers we have walked beside  him The long journey of the day,

And have told him of  the  darkness That has swept our  hope away.

He has offered words of comfort, Words of energy and light,

And our hearts have blazed within us As he saved us from the night.

Stay with us, dear Love, and raise us, Once again the night is near.

Dine with us and share your wisdom, Free our hearts from every fear.

In the calm of each new evening, In the  freshness of each dawn,

If you hold us fast in friendship We will never be alone.

Text: Ralph Wright, OSB, alt ; Tune:  HOLY MANNA

SERVICE    OF THE WORD

Evening Psalmody

Antiphon One

Jesus joined his dejected disiples, but they did  not recognize him. He asked them,

“Did not the Christ have to suffer such before entering into his glory?” Alleluia!

Psalm 109/110

Adonai, to the One who will reign:

“Come and be My companion;

We will undo selfishness and sin.”

The Spirit will bring from Zion

The power and strength to save:

Love changing foes into friends.

Precious from the day of your birth

on the holy mountain;

from the womb before the dawn I begot you.

The Promise holds true forever:

Your ministry is Loving-Kindness–

A priest like Melchizedek of old.

Companions of the Most High are ready

To liberate all who suffer from evil.

The One who calls us to justice

Invites us to join in the struggle:

Enlightening all who are unaware of the truth.

Drink from streams of Living Water,

Lift your head and celebrate the feast.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

and to the BREATH of Love,

as always before,

so now and evermore, Amen.

Jesus joined his dejected disiples, but they did  not recognize him. He asked them,

“Did not the Christ have to suffer such before entering into his glory?” Alleluia!

Antiphon Two

God brought out this people with shouts of rejoicing.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

Psalm 113a/114

When Israel came out from Egypt

Jacob’s children from a foreign country

Judah became the holy place for Adonai

Israel became the place where God reigns.

The sea fled at the sight

the Jordan turned back on its course,

the mountains leapt like rams

and the hills like yearling sheep.

Why was it sea, that you fled?

that you turned back, Jordan, on your course?

Mountains, why did you leap like rams

and you hills, like yearling sheep?

Tremble, O Earth, before Adonai,

in the presence of the God of Love,

Who turns the rock into a pool

and flint into a spring of water.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

and to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

READING          I Peter 1:17-19

If you invoke as Abba the One who judges impartially according to each one’s works,
conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning,
realizing that you were ransomed from the pointless behaviors, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold
but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb.

 Responsory

R.  This is the day Adonai has made * alleluia, alleluia!  V. Let us rejoice and be happy today *alleluia, alleluia!  V.  Glory to the Abba and the Word and the Holy Breath of Love.

Gospel Canticle

Antiphon

Stay with us, Lord, for it  is  near evening

and the day is almost  over, Alleluia, alleluia!

Canticle of Mary

My heart + is radiant with the Lord,

My whole being delights in God my Savior.

All people now will call me blessed

For God has loved this humble handmaid.

The Almighty has shown me great favor

Holy is the NAME,

Whose mercy embraces the faithful,

From one generation to the next.

The mighty arm of God,

Scatters the proud in their own conceit,

Pulls tyrants from their thrones

While lifting up the lowly:

Fills the famished with bounty,

And reveals the emptiness of riches.

Rescues lowly Israel,

Sharing such loving kindness,

As promised to our ancestors

To Abraham and Sarah, and their descendants forever.

Glory to the One and to the Word

And to the Holy Breath of Love

As always before

So now and evermore. Amen

Stay with us, Lord, for it  is  near evening

and the day is almost  over, Alleluia, alleluia!

SERVICE OF PRAYER

Litany of Intercession

O Risen Love, you appeared first to women and made them the first apostles and evangelists of the Resurrection; ~may the many gifts you have given to women for leadership and service be recognized and affirmed in communities of faith and in civic and economic life.

O Risen Love, you appeared to the disciples huddled in fear and breathed on them the life-force of your loving Spirit; ~may each of us inhale your Holy Spirit, permit it to transform our hearts, and then join you in breathing forgiveness and compassion into a world gasping for life.

O Risen Love, you revealed yourself to dejected and despondent disciples in the simple-yet-sacred act of breaking-and-sharing bread; ~may we recognize the sacred in every part of our lives and the power of your presence in the sharing of all your gifts that nourish and sustain life.

O Risen Love, you revealed yourself to Thomas as the One-Who-Had-Been-Slain, and to Saul as the One-Who-Is-Being-Persecuted; ~may we recognize you in all those who  have been wounded by scapegoating, oppression, marginalization, imprisonment, addictions, mental illness, depression and disillusionment.

O Risen Love, with every appearance you blessed your disciples deep peace, profound joy, and the end of fear; ~ may our celebration of these great 50 Days of Easter extend these blessings to all our sisters and brothers and all of your beloved creation.

Prayer of Jesus

Our Dear Abba in heaven, holy be your name, your Kin-dom come, your will be done on Earth as in Heaven.  Give us today our daily bread; forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  Do not bring us to the test but deliver us from evil; for the Kin-dom the power and the glory are yours now and forever.  Amen.

Closing Prayer

We bless and thank you, O Gracious God, for all that you have done in raising Jesus from the dead. You have conquered the power of death and opened to us the way to the freedom, flourishing and fullness of life which your love offers to us and all of your creation.  May the Risen Christ open our eyes and breathe into our hearts that we may recognize him in the wounds of the world, know him in the breaking and sharing of bread, and follow him in his risen life now and forever.   Amen

Blessing

May the God of Light and Life who brought Jesus through death to resurrection + bless us with Peace and Joy, Alleluia!  ~Amen, Alleluia!

Let us bless Adonai, Alleluia, Alleluia!    ~Thanks be to God, Alleluia, Alleluia!

 pieta

Those who wish may end evening prayer with the Marian Antiphon for the Easter Season.

Regina Caeli laetare, alleluia!

Quia Quem meruisti portare, alleluia!

Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia!

Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia!

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia!

For our Love is truly risen, Alleluia!

Let us pray.

Holy, Immortal and Mighty God, you have brought joy to the world by raising Jesus from the dead. By the prayers of Mary his Mother, and of all the myrrh-bearing women,

raise us up with Jesus and bring us to the fullness of life.  We ask this through the same Jesus Christ, our Risen Love.  Amen.
