Veni et ostende nobis faciem tuam, Domine,

qui sedes super Cherubim: et salvi erimus.

We light three Candles on the Advent Wreath. Signing our lips with the Cross we say or sing:

O Holy ONE + open my lips,

~And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Blest is the One who comes in the NAME of our God

~Hosanna in the highest!

ADVENT MORNING HYMN

All may sing or alternate the verses of an Advent Morning Hymn—such as

O child of promise come! O come, Emmanuel!

Come, prince of peace, to David’s throne; Come, God-with-us, to dwell.

The Lord’s true Servant, come, In whom is God’s delight,

On Whom the holy Spirit rests, the Gentiles’ promised light!

O come, anointed, One, To show blind eyes your face!

Good tidings to the poor announce; Proclaim God’s year of grace!

O Man of sorrows, come, Despised and cast aside!

O bear our griefs, and by your wounds Redeem us from our pride!

O Come, Messiah King, To reign in endless light,

When heav’nly peace at last goes forth From Sion’s holy height!

Text: James Quinn, S.J. (1919-2010). Tune: SWABIA S.M.

PSALMODY

Antiphon

He will sit on the throne of David,

and forever rule over David’s kingdom.

Psalm 71/72a

O God, give our leader right judgment

your justice to those who rule,

that they may judge your people with justice,

and do right for those without power.

May the mountains bear peace for the people;

the hills, bring forth justice.

May the ruler defend the poor

and set all their children free.

May God’s chosen live as long as the sun

as long as the moon, forever.

May God’s anointed be like rain on the meadow,

like showers that soak the earth.

In whose days justice shall flourish

and peace till the moon be no more.

May this rule be from sea to sea

from the Great River to the ends of the Earth.

Enemies will stumble and fall,

foes will lick the dust.

The kings of Tarshish and the islands

will bring and offer their riches.

Kings of Sheba, and Saba

will carry their gifts.

All rulers of peoples lie prostrate;

and nations be ready to serve.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

And to the BREATH of Love;

as always before,

so now and evermore. Amen.

He will sit on the throne of David,

and forever rule over David’s kingdom.

READING   Isaiah 7: 10-14

Adonai spoke to Ahaz, “Ask a sign of Adonai Elohim; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”  But Ahaz said, ” I will not ask, I will not put Adonai to the test.”  The prophet then said, “Hear then, O house of David!  Is it too little for you to weary other people, that you must weary God as well?  Therefore Adonai will give you a sign.  Behold, a young woman will conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel for God is with us!

Responsory

R. Soon Adonai your ruler will come * and he shall be called Emmanuel

V. Justice shall flower in his days and profound peace.

* and he shall be called Emmanuel.

V. Glory to the Abba and the Word and the Holy Breath of Love.

Canticle of Zachary                                                                        Luke 1:68-79

Canticle may be preceded and followed by an antiphon based on the feast celebrated that day.
Gospel Antiphon:

 The Holy Spirit will come upon you, Mary; do not be afraid;

your womb will bear the Son of God, Alleluia!

 It  is customary to make the sign of the cross at the beginning of the Gospel Canticle.

Blessed + be Adonai, the God of Israel,

Who visits this people to set us free

Raising for us a sign of salvation

In the house and family of David.

God promised throughout past ages

In words of holy prophets

To save us from our enemies,

And from the control of our oppressors.

Adonai favored our ancestors

And remembered the sacred covenant.

The pledge to Abraham and Sarah

Is now renewed for us;

That freed from the grip of our foes

We might worship without fear

And be both just and holy

For the rest of our days.

And you, child, called “prophet of the Most High,”

Will go ahead to prepare the way,

By teaching this people of salvation

Through forgiveness of their sins.

For the loving compassion of the Holy One,

As the Rising Sun will shine on us,

To illumine the darkness and dispel death’s shadow;

To guide our feet on the way of peace.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

And to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

The Holy Spirit will come upon you, Mary; do not be afraid;

your womb will bear the Son of God, Alleluia!

Closing Prayer & Blessing

Creator and Redeemer of humankind, your eternal Word took flesh in the house and family of David.  His justice is the key which unlocks the chains of racism, sexism, and classism; his truth  is the key which unlocks the prisons of arrogance, ignorance, and fear; his compassion is the key that leads to freedom, flourishing and the fullness of life.  May the celebration of his birth in just a few days, close  and lock the door to selfishness and sin that  we may join him and your Holy Spirit in renewing the face of the Earth,

For you live and reign in the power of justice and love,  one God forever and ever.  Amen.

May the justice and love of the + Holy ONE

unlock our hearts and minds that we may receive the gift of Jesus-Emmanuel.

~Amen.

Let us bless Adonai.

~Thanks be to God.
