Eighth Sunday after Epiphany, EP I

SERVICE OF LIGHT

Greeting/Invocation
We light the Evening Candle and say or sing:

Light and Peace in Jesus Christ our Lord!

~Thanks be to God!

Stay with us Lord for it is evening,

~And the day is almost over.

Hymn for Saturday Evening

O Trinity of Common Life,

Who are but One in mystery,

As now our day draws to its close

to us give peace and unity.

We praise you as our day begins

And seek your blessing as it ends;

Our glory is to sing your praise

At every hour for all our days.

Let every creature join the song:

“All glory thanks and praise belong

To God, the Holy One-in-Three

Both now and for eternity!”  Amen!

Text: O Lux Beata Trinity 7th/8th century; Tune: Plainsong Mode 1

SERVICE OF THE WORD

Evening Psalm

Antiphon/Refrain

May the Name of Adonai be blessed, both now and forevermore.

Psalm 112/113

Servants of God, sing praise,

praise God’s holy Name.

Bless the Name of the Holy One,

both now and forever.

From the rising of the sun to its setting

praised be the Holy Name.

Adonai towers above the nations;

God’s glory shines over the heavens.

Who compares to the Holy One?

Who is enthroned so high,

yet stoops from the heights to look down,

to observe both heaven and Earth?

Love lifts the humble from the dust

And raises the poor from the mire

To be seated with leaders of the people,

and to wear a crown of joy;

The childless, no longer alone,

Rejoice in many children.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

and to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

May the Name of Adonai be blessed, both now and forevermore.

Reading           2 Peter 1:19-21

We possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.

 Responsory

R. Root and offspring of David, our bright morning star, *Come, Lord Jesus!    V. The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!” Let everyone who hears them reply:   *Come, Lord Jesus!  V.  Glory to the Abba and the Word and the Breath of Love.

Gospel Antiphon

No one can serve two masters.
You will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and money.

Canticle from Philippians 2: 6-11

Though he was in the form of God

Jesus did not  snatch at equality with God.

Instead, he emptied himself,

and took the form of  a servant,

and was born in the likeness of human beings.

And being found in human form,

he humbled himself,

and became obedient unto death,

even death on a cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name

that is above every other name.

That at the name of Jesus

every knee should bow

in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

And every tongue confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God his Abba.

Glory to the Abba and to the Word

And to the Breath of Love

As always before

So now and evermore. Amen

No one can serve two masters.
You will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and money.

Marian Antiphon

Those who wish may end evening prayer with the Marian Antiphon.
[Ave Regina Caelorum is sung from the 3rd of February until Good Friday, inclusive.]

Queen of the heavens we greet you, Queen of Angels we entreat you,

Fairest flower, heaven’s portal From whom came the Light immortal.

Matchless maiden, God did raise you For the Universe to praise you.

Hear us, O hear us, dear Mother; Show your children Jesus, our brother.

Gracious Queen of the Universe:

~Intercede for us with Christ, your Son.

Let us pray.  O Gracious God, grant to your people lasting health of mind and of body.

Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we be freed from present sorrow and attain eternal happiness.  We ask this through Christ our Love.  Amen.
