April 21 – Saint Anselm of Canterbury

April 21 – Anselm of Canterbury

Invitation to Worship

Let us praise our God in the wisdom of blessed Anselm! Alleluia, Alleluia!

We make the Sign of the Cross over our  lips as we begin.

O Holy ONE + open my lips,

~And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Awake my soul and sing; Alleluia!

~ With God’s praise I will  wake the dawn, Alleluia!

MORNING HYMN FOR SAINT ANSELM

All may sing or alternate the verses of any Morning Hymn .

Let us give witness, humbly though we sing it,

To Saint Anselm, Teacher of Wisdom,

Just in election, just in all his manner:

Witness by living.

Public the witness, striking and dramatic.

Virgins and martyrs give as their own glory;

Not less Confessors stand as signs of holy

Witness to Christ’s Church.

Jesus is risen: this the truth confessing,

Christ the encounter, brought to every person;

Christ the encountered, everyone His neighbor:

Witness to Christ’s life.

Triune the witness, borne by Blessed Anselm:

Service of others, Christ and His assembly:

Simply relating to the Triune Persons

Witness the Godhead.  Amen!

Text: St. Meinrad, 1968, alt.; Tune ISTE CONFESSOR, Mode 1 Adpt.

PSALMODY

Antiphon

Servant of our God,

proven faithful in little tasks, enter now the joy of your Master, Alleluia!

Psalm 83/84

How glorious is your dwelling place,

O Adonai Sabbaoth!

My soul longs, yes aches,

yearning for the courts of Adonai.

My body and soul ring out their joy

to the Living Heart of Love!

As the sparrow herself seeks a home

and the swallow a nest for her brood,

I am eager to rest near your altars,

Adonai Sabbaoth! My God and my Love!

To live in your presence is  joy,

to praise you and never stop.

Those you bless with strength and courage,

will bless you with grateful hearts.

When they cross the Valley of Thirst

they find the ground spaced with springs,

blessed with the rains of autumn.

They travel with growing excitement

to reach the God of  gods in Zion.

Hear me, Adonai Sabbaoth!

Heed me, O God of Jacob!

Turn your eyes, O God, our Shield,

behold the face of your anointed.

One day within your courts

is worth a thousand spent elsewhere!

I would rather stand outside your Gates

than dwell in splendor with the wicked.

God is our support and our shield,

the giver of grace and glory.

Adonai never fails to bless

those who walk with integrity.

How blest, Adonai Sabbaoth,

are all those who trust in you!

Glory to the ONE through the WORD

In the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

Servant of our God,

proven faithful in little tasks, enter now the joy of your Master; Alleluia

READING     Ephesians 3:14-19

I kneel before our Abba,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
that God may grant you in accord with the riches of divine glory
to be strengthened with power through the Spirit in the inner self,
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, rooted and grounded in love,
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,
so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Silent Prayer

Responsory

R. Uphold me O God, according to your promise and I shall live; And do not confound me in my expectations, Alleluia!

V. I bind myself to do your will, do not disappoint me.

V.  I will run the way of your commands, you give freedom to my heart.

V. Glory to the Abba and to the Word, and to the Holy Breath of Love.

Canticle of Zachary–  Luke 1:68-79

 Antiphon

I do not seek to understand that I may believe

but I believe so that I might understand, Alleluia!

Blessed + be Adonai, the God of Israel,

Who visits this people to set us free

Raising for us a sign of salvation

In the house and family of David.

God promised throughout past ages

In words of holy prophets

To save us from our enemies,

And from the control of our oppressors.

Adonai favored our ancestors

And remembered the sacred covenant.

The pledge to Abraham and Sarah

Is now renewed for us;

That freed from the grip of our foes

We might worship without fear

And be both just and holy

For the rest of our days.

And you, child, called “prophet of the Most High,”

Will go ahead to prepare the way,

By teaching this people of salvation

Through forgiveness of their sins.

For the loving compassion of the Holy One

As the Rising Sun will shine upon us

To illumine the darkness and dispel death’s shadow

To guide our feet on the way of peace.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

and to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

I do not seek to understand that I may believe

but believe that I might understand, Alleluia!

Prayer from the Proslogion of St. Anselm

(Cap. 14, 16, 26: Opera omnia, edit. Schmitt, Seccovii, 1938, 1, 111-113)

O supreme and inaccessible light, O complete and blessed truth, how far you are from me, even though I am so near to you! How remote you are from my sight, even though I am present to yours! You are everywhere in your entirety, and yet I do not see you; in you I move and have my being, and yet I cannot approach you; you are within me and around me, and yet I do not perceive you.

O God, let me know you and love you so that I may find my joy in you; and if I cannot do so fully in this life, let me at least make some progress every day, until at last that knowledge, love and joy come to me in all their plenitude. While I am here on earth let me learn to know you better, so that in heaven I may know you fully; let my love for you grow deeper here, so that there I may love you fully. On earth then I shall have great joy in hope, and in heaven complete joy in the fulfilment of my hope.

~ Amen.

  Blessing

May the God of love who raised Jesus from the dead, + fill us with all joy and peace,

so that  we may share all we have with those who are in need.

~Amen.

Let us bless Adonai, Alleluia, Alleluia!

~Thanks be to God, Alleluia, Alleluia!
