Recorded in the Couvent of the Soeurs Dominicaines de Sainte Famille, Fanjeaux, France
Invitation to Worship
Alleluia! The Spirit of Adonai fills the whole world, Alleluia!
O Holy One,+ open my lips.
~And my mouth will proclaim your praise.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, alleluia;
~And You will renew the face of the Earth, alleluia!
Hymn for Pentecost
Rejoice! the year upon its way
Has brought again that blessed day,
When on the chosen of the Lord
The Holy Spirit was outpoured.
On each the fire, descending stood
In quivering tongues’ similitude —
Tongues, that their words might ready prove,
And fire, to make them flame with love.
To all in ev’ry tongue they spoke;
Amazement in the crowd awoke,
Who mocked, as overcome with wine,
Those who were filled with pow’r divine.
These things were done in type that day,
When Paschaltide had passed away,
The number told which once set free
The captives at the jubilee.
And now, O Holy God, this day
Regard us as we humbly pray,
And send us, from your heavenly seat,
The blessings of the Paraclete.
To God the Abba, God the Son,
And God the Spirit praise be done;
May Christ, our Love, upon us pour
The Spirit’s gifts forevermore. Amen.
Text: BEATUS NOBIS GAUDIA (4th century); tr. R E Roberts (1879-1953), alt. Tune: BLESSED DAY, L.M.
PSALMODY
Antiphon One
When the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close,
they were all together in one place. Alleluia!
Psalm 103/104
Bless Adonai, my soul!
Adonai, my God, you are so great!
Clothed with majesty and glory,
wrapped in light as with a robe.
You stretched out the heavens like a tent,
set its poles in the waters of the deep,
You make the clouds your chariots
and ride on the wings of the Winds;
you make the Winds your messengers,
Fire and Flame minister to your will.
You set Mother Earth on her foundations,
so she may stand firm forever.
Covered her with the deep as with a garment:
with waters as high as the mountains.
At your invitation the Waters fled,
at your thunder they took flight;
they flowed over the mountains
and went down to their appointed valleys;
You set a limit they might not pass
lest they cover the Earth again.
Your Springs pour water into the ravines;
it flows between the mountains,
gives drink to all creatures of the field;
the wild Donkeys quench their thirst.
Glory to the ONE and to the WORD
And to the BREATH of Love!
As always before,
so now and evermore. Amen
When the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close,
they were all together in one place. Alleluia!
Antiphon Two
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak: Alleluia!
The Birds of the sky nest by the waters;
and sing your praise among the branches.
You water Mountains from the clouds of heaven;
the Soil is satisfied by the fruit of your work
It make Grass grow for the Cattle,
and Plants for People to cultivate—
bringing forth Food from the Earth:
wine that gladdens our hearts,
oil to make our faces shine,
and bread to sustain our lives.
The Trees of Adonai are well-watered,
the cedars of Lebanon that God planted.
There the Birds make their nests;
the Stork has its home in the Junipers.
The high Mountains belong to the wild Goats;
the Crags provide refuge for the Badger.
You made the Moon to mark the seasons,
and the Sun knows the hour of its setting.
You bring darkness, it becomes night,
and all the Beasts of the Forest prowl.
The Lions roar for their prey
and seek their food from God.
The Sun rises, and they steal away;
they return and rest in their dens.
Then People go out to their work,
to their labor until evening falls.
Glory to the ONE and to the WORD
And to the BREATH of Love!
As always before,
so now and evermore. Amen
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak. Alleluia!
Antiphon Three
The Spirit of Adonai has filled the whole world. Alleluia!
How many are your Works, Adonai!
In wisdom you made them all;
the Earth is full of your Creatures.
There is the Sea, vast and spacious,
teeming with Creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.
There the ships go to and fro,
and Leviathan, the great sea monster
whom you created as a friend and companion.
All your Creatures look to you
to give them their Food in due season.
You open wide your hand,
they are filled with Good Things.
When you hide your face,
they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
they die and return to the dust.
When you send your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the Earth.
May your glory, Adonai, endure forever;
may you always rejoice in your works—
For you look at the earth, and it trembles,
you touch the mountains, and wreathe them in smoke.
I will sing to You, Adonai all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
May my song be pleasing to you,
May my soul always bless Your Name.
Glory to the ONE and to the WORD
And to the BREATH of Love!
As always before,
so now and evermore. Amen
The Spirit of Adonai has filled the whole world. Alleluia!
READING ACTS 2: 1-5
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were gathered.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues,
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Responsory
R. The Spirit the Paraclete alleluia, alleluia!
V. Will teach you all things * alleluia, alleluia!
V. Glory to the Abba and the Word and the Holy Breath of Love.
Canticle of Zachariah
Antiphon
Suddenly there came a sound like that of a rushing wind,
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Alleluia!
Blessed + be Adonai, the God of Israel,
Who visits this people to set us free
Raising for us a sign of salvation
In the house and family of David.
God promised throughout past ages
In words of holy prophets
To save us from our enemies,
And from the control of our oppressors.
Adonai favored our ancestors
And remembered the sacred covenant.
The pledge to Abraham and Sarah
Is now renewed for us;
That freed from the grip of our foes
We might worship without fear
And be both just and holy
For the rest of our days.
And you, child, called “prophet of the Most High,”
Will go ahead to prepare the way,
By teaching this people of salvation
Through forgiveness of their sins.
For the loving compassion of the Holy One
As the Rising Sun will shine upon us
To illumine the darkness and dispel death’s shadow
To guide our feet on the way of peace.
Glory to the ONE and to the WORD
And to the BREATH of Love!
As always before,
so now and evermore. Amen
Suddenly there came a sound like that of a rushing wind,
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Alleluia!
