St. Martin De Porres (Transferred)

3 NOVEMBER –ST. MARTIN DE PORRES (1579-1639)

Invitation to Worship

Come, let us sing to Adonai! Let us praise the God of all creation!

O Holy One, + open my lips,

~And my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

The hand of our God will feed us;

~God answers all our needs!

HYMN TO ST. MARTIN DE PORRES

O Martin, in the halls of light

You shine, a jewel, sparkling bright;

Come now to help us from above

And bring us tokens of your love.

A pattern of God’s love divine,

You have been made midst all to shine;

May every nation in you see

The image of Christ’s charity.

By God’s life-giving Spirit led

You cured the sick, the needy fed;

Your kind heart warmed the orphans small;

They called you Father of them all.

With flame of charity inspired

Obtain that we be strongly fired;

By which more freely God above

And neighbor, too, we hold in love.

May charity, which knows no bound,

In everyone be always found;

And Christ’s same peace on all folks shine,

Redeemed by his same blood divine.

All praise to Abba and to Son,

And Holy Spirit, Three in One;

May they, at your request, bestow

On us their favors here below. Amen

Adonai hears the cry of the poor, Praised be Adonai

who will hear the cry of the  poor. (Refrain)

Ev’ry spirit crushed God will save;

will be ransom for  their  lives;

will be safe shelter for their fears,

and will hear the cry of the poor. (Refrain)

We proclaim your greatness O God,

your praise ever in our mouth;

ev’ry face brightened by your light

for you hear the cry of the poor.  (Refrain)

READING        Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all people know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, sisters and brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.

Responsory

R.  This one command I give you  that you love each other just as I have been loving you.  V. By this will all people know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.  V.  Glory to the Abba and the Word and the Holy Breath of Love.

Gospel Canticle

Antiphon

Adonai favored our ancestors,

and called Martin to serve others with joy.

Blessed + be Adonai, the God of Israel,

Who visits this people to set us free

Raising for us a sign of salvation

In the house and family of David.

God promised throughout past ages

In words of holy prophets

To save us from our enemies,

And from the control of our oppressors.

Adonai favored our ancestors

And remembered the sacred covenant.

The pledge to Abraham and Sarah

Is now renewed for us;

That freed from the grip of our foes

We might worship without fear

And be both just and holy

For the rest of our days.

And you, child, called “prophet of the Most High,”

Will go ahead to prepare the way,

By teaching this people of salvation

Through forgiveness of their sins.

For the loving compassion of the Holy One

As the Rising Sun will shine upon us

To illumine the darkness and dispel death’s shadow

To guide our feet on the way of peace.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

And to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

Adonai favored our ancestors,

and called Martin to serve others with joy.

 Litany of Intercession

By Martin’s intense love for the needs and cares of others, he discovered God’s goodness in all things;

~ may we see God in everyone and in everything.

By Martin’s shining example of detachment from worldly and material pleasures, he was free to experience the Holy in the ordinary;

~ may we continually grow in awareness of God’s grace in our lives.

Through his practice of humility and poverty, Martin experienced the riches of friendship with those whom society ignored, despised, or relegated to the margins;

~ may we open our hearts and our lives to develop and nurture genuine relationships with those marginalized or excluded.

Martin used his training, his knowledge of herbs and medicines, and the resources of his Dominican community to extend healing and care for the sick and injured, humans and animals ; ~ may we use our training, gifts and talents to build a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.

Prayer of Jesus

Our Father…

Closing Prayer

Gracious God of Wisdom and Compassion, you called Martin DePorres to challenge with his humility, intelligence, and love the racism and classism that permeated the Church and Society of his day.  With the help of his prayers and example, strengthen each of us to search for truth, to work for justice, and to build communities of compassion in partnership with others.  For yours is the power and glory of love, now and forever.  Amen

Blessing

May God bless + us, protect us from all evil, and lead us to freedom and the fullness of life,  ~Amen.

Let us bless Adonai.   ~Thanks be to God.
