Service of Light

Greeting/Invocation

 We light the Evening Candle and say or sing:

Light and Peace in Jesus Christ our Lord!

~Thanks be to God!

O Adonai, You are my light;

~My God, You  illumine my darkness.

EVENING HYMN for LENT

Guide me now O great Redeemer, Pilgrim thorough this barren land.

I am weak but you are mighty, Hold me with your pow’rful hand;

Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain with its healing streams so true;

Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through;

Strong deliverer Always be my strength and shield.

When I tread the river Jordan, Make my anxious fears subside;

Death of death and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Cannan’s side;

Songs and praises I will always raise on high.

Text: William Williams (1717-1719), alt; Tune: ST RAPHAEL 87.87.47

 SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALMODY

 Antiphon

Those who are sowing with tears

will harvest with songs of joy.

Psalm 125/126

When Adonai brought us back to Zion

we were like dreamers:

laughing and dancing,

with songs on our lips!

The nations exclaimed:

“A new world of wonders!

Adonai is with them.”

Yes, our God works wonders.

Rejoice and be glad!

Adonai, free us from bondage

as water to thirsty land.

Those who are sowing in tears

will laugh and sing as they reap.

The went out with weeping and tears

carrying seeds to be sown:

They come back, they return with singing

holding the harvest high.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

And to the BREATH of Love;

as always before,

so now and evermore. Amen.

Those who are sowing with tears

will harvest with songs of joy.

Reading  Philippians 2:12b-15a

Work with anxious concern to achieve your salvation.  It is God, who in good will toward you, begets in you any measure of desire or achievement.  In everything you do, act without grumbling or arguing; prove yourselves innocent and straightforward, children of God without  reproach.

Responsory

R. It is Adonai Elohim we choose to serve; * It is God’s voice that we will obey.

V. For us there is one God from whom all things come and for whom we exist *it is God’s voice that we will obey. V. Glory to the ONE, to the WORD, and to the BREATH of Love.

Gospel Canticle of Mary

Antiphon

I have not come to abolish but to complete;

nothing of the law shall disappear until its purpose is achieved.

It is customary to make the sign of the cross at the beginning of the Gospel Canticle.

My heart + is radiant with the Lord,

My whole being delights in God my Savior.

All people now will call me blessed

For God has loved this humble handmaid.

The Almighty has shown me great favor

Holy is the NAME,

Whose mercy embraces the faithful,

From one generation to the next.

The mighty arm of God,

Scatters the proud in their own conceit,

Pulls tyrants from their thrones

While lifting up the lowly:

Fills the famished with bounty,

And reveals the emptiness of riches.

Rescues lowly Israel,

Sharing such loving kindness,

As promised to our ancestors

To Abraham and Sarah, and their descendants forever.

Glory to the ONE and to  WORD

And to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

I have not come to abolish but to complete;

nothing of the law shall disappear until its purpose is achieved.

Queen of the heavens we greet you, Queen of Angels now we entreat you,

Fairest flower, heaven’s portal From whom came the Light immortal.

Matchless maiden, God did raise you For the Universe to praise you.

Hear us, O hear us, dear Mother; Show your children Jesus, our brother.

Pray for us O Gracious Queen of the Universe.

~ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.  O Gracious God, grant to your people lasting health of mind and body. Send us your assistance in times of temptation.  May we who celebrate the memory of the Holy Mother of God, rise from our sins by the help  of her intercession.  We ask this through Christ our Love.  Amen.
