I LENT Thursday

Foot-washing-Erspamer

Service of Light

Greeting/Invocation

 We light the Evening Candle and say or sing:

Light and Peace in Jesus Christ our Lord!

~Thanks be to God!

O Adonai, You are my light;

~My God, You  illumine my darkness.

EVENING HYMN for LENT

O Christ, you are the light and day which drives away the night,

the ever-shining Sun of God and pledge of  future light.

As now the evening shadows fall, O grant, dear Love, we pray,

A quiet night to rest in you Until  the break of  day.

O Christ, be near us while we sleep, Keep us this night from sin;

That dawn may find us fresh, restored a new day to begin.

And while our hearts keep watch for us, Our eyes may take their rest;

Protect your faithful people, Lord, Who by your love are blest.  Amen.

Tune: BANGOR C.M.  Text: Christe qui es Lux et Dies, tr. Frank Quinn, OP, alt.

 SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALMODY

 Antiphon

I place all my trust in you, my God, all my hope is in your saving word.

Psalm 129/130

From the depths I call to you,

Adonai, hear my  cry.

Catch the sound of my voice

raised up and pleading.

If you, Adonai, were to record our sins.

My God, who would survive?

But because you are ready to forgive

we stand in wonder and awe.

My soul is waiting for you, Adonai;

I count on your Word.

My soul is longing for You

more than those who watch for daybreak.

Let the sentries count on the dawn

and let Israel count on You.

Because with you there is compassion

and fullness of redemption.

Israel, indeed, You will redeem

from all our iniquity.

Glory to the ONE and to the WORD

And to the BREATH of Love;

as always before,

so now and evermore. Amen.

I place all my trust in you, my God, all my hope is in your saving word.

Reading  Ezekiel 36:24-26

I will take you from every nation and country and bring you back to your own land.

I will sprinkle clean water on you and make you clean from all your idols and everything else that has defiled you.  I will give you a new heart and a new mind. I will take away your stubborn heart of stone and give you an obedient heart.  I will put my spirit in you and will see to it that you follow my laws and keep all the commands I have given you.  Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors.  You will be my people and I will  be your God.

Responsory

R. I will sprinkle clean water on you *and make you clean from all that defiles you.

V. I will take away your heart of stone and put my spirit within you.  *and make you clean of all that defiles you.  V.  Glory to the ONE, to the WORD, and to the Holy BREATH of Life.

Gospel Canticle of Mary

Antiphon

Treat others as you would have them treat you:

this is the Law and the Prophets.

It is customary to make the sign of the cross at the beginning of the Gospel Canticle.

My heart + is radiant with the Lord,

My whole being delights in God my Savior.

All people now will call me blessed

For God has loved this humble handmaid.

The Almighty has shown me great favor

Holy is the NAME,

Whose mercy embraces the faithful,

From one generation to the next.

The mighty arm of God,

Scatters the proud in their own conceit,

Pulls tyrants from their thrones

While lifting up the lowly:

Fills the famished with bounty,

And reveals the emptiness of riches.

Rescues lowly Israel,

Sharing such loving kindness,

As promised to our ancestors

To Abraham and Sarah, and their descendants forever.

Glory to the ONE and to  WORD

And to the BREATH of Love!

As always before,

so now and evermore.  Amen

Treat others as you would have them treat you:

this is the Law and the Prophets.

Service of Prayer

Litany of Intercession

In ancient times you freed those enslaved in Pharaoh’s empire;

Liberate us today, from our slavery to self-centeredness and greed.

In ancient times you led your people on their journey with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night; Lead us today with the light and truth of your love.

In ancient times you fed your  people in the desert with manna from heaven;

Use us today to feed migrants and refugees fleeing from poverty and war.

In ancient times you opened to your people a door of hope in the promised land;

Open to us today the door to the new heavens and new Earth.

In ancient times, you called Hagar and Rebecca, Shiphrah and Puah; Miriam and Rahab, Esther and Judith to challenge  the restrictions of patriarchy and empire;

Call all who claim your Name today, to recognize the gifts you give women for leadership and ministry in all our communities.

In ancient times, you consoled those grieving from the loss of their land and loved ones;

Comfort us today, and surround all those who mourn with consolation and peace.

In these last days, you taught us to pray

Our Father …

Prayer of Jesus

Our Father …

Closing Prayer & Blessing

Grant us, O Gracious  God, in all our ways of life your help, in all our uncertainties  your counsel, in all our temptations your protection, in all our work for justice your guidance, in all our sorrows your peace.  Convert our hearts and hands to your designs that we may work and pray for the salvation and fullness of life for all people and all your beloved creation, for you live and love One God forever and ever. Amen.

May the God of all Compassion +   bless us with forgiveness and fill our hearts with loving-kindness for all people and all creation .   Amen.

Let us bless Adonai!    ~And give thanks to God.

Those who wish may end evening prayer with the Marian Antiphon. Ave Regina Caelorum is sung from the 3rd of February until Good Friday, inclusive.

Queen of the heavens we greet you, Queen of Angels now we entreat you,

Fairest flower, heaven’s portal From whom came the Light immortal.

Matchless maiden, God did raise you For the Universe to praise you.

Hear us, O hear us, dear Mother; Show your children Jesus, our brother.

Pray for us O Gracious Queen of the Universe.

~ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.  O Gracious God, grant to your people lasting health of mind and body. Send us your assistance in times of temptation.  May we who celebrate the memory of the Holy Mother of God, rise from our sins by the help  of her intercession.  We ask this through Christ our Love.  Amen.
